Week 3 Day 4 - "Theft, Drugs, and Violence "
Last Tuesday I had already been at Escuela Puente Casa and had saved "the wicked crime chapter for a future topic". This is today.
Two days before my last visit, someone broke into the school's kitchen through the roof, and then fished the metal cashbox from behind thick iron bars, used a machete to break it open and stole the money. There were more than 150.000 colones (approx. 300 USD) in there, and the money was for the Fiesta de la Alegría, the year end party for the students. Remember that the students at this particular school come from the poorest of backgrounds. Sadly, the way the crime was committed, it had to be someone who knew about the exact location of the cashbox. The thief could not get into the room behind the iron bars, and the cashbox was not visible from the outside. Also, the size of the hole in the ceiling (check the picture) indicates that only a child could fit through. Luckily, the thief(s) were either disturbed or negligent, as they overlooked a little plastic bag which contained several of the larger bills. Hence only about one third of the money was really missing.
When I came back to Escuela Puente Casa today, Doña Sandra had invited a guest speaker for the students of grades 4 though 6: Don Luís Martín Alvarado, a D.A.R.E. officer (D.A.R.E. = Drug Abuse Resistance Education). He was dressed like a police officer and I originally thought he had just received the assignement as a variation of his daily routine, and I was very impressed how he opened the topic and found a language and examples that were relevant for the kids that age. It went beyond the drug & violence topic and included making the students aware of how choices they make now will affect their future; and how their parents could only pave the way but it was their responsibility to make the best out of the opportunities presented to them. Eventually, I understood that this type of educational events is what Don Luís was trained to do. He finished off with a few games, and for each portion of the game a different skill was relevant: to be tall, to be fast, to be small, etc. and it was important for each team to recognize that and make a new choice for best player for each round.
My contribution that day was rather simple: The teachers had their "Secret Santa" gift exchange and it was my task to collect the gifts to make sure the secrecy was maintained.

Dirk... eigentlich hatte ich gedacht, mit den überschüssigen Spenden die gestolenen Gelder zu ersetzen, damit das Fiesta de la Alegría am Schuljahresende auf jeden Fall stattfinden kann. Irving hat auf meinen Vorschlag jedoch mit einer Alternatividee reagiert... aber auch bei der deutschen Zusammenfassung sollte ich am Anfang anfangen:
Bei der Escuela Puente Casa wurde zwei Tag vor meinem letzten Besuch eingebrochen. Dabei ist der Dieb durch die Decke in der Küche eingestiegen. Auf dem Foto kann man das Loch sehen. Neben der Küche ist eine Art Vorratskammer, die durch eine Gittertür mit dicken Stäben und diversen Schlössern gesichert ist. Außerdem ist die Decke an der Stelle zusätzlich mit Stahl gesichert, d.h. der Dieb hätte nicht direkt dort einsteigen können. In dieser Kammer befand sich außer Sichtweite eine kleine Metallkassette mit den Ersparnissen von ca. 150.000 Colones (über EUR 200) für die Fiesta de la Alegría, dem alljährlichen Abschlußfest für die Schulkinder. Jemand hat diese Kassette aus der Ecke herausgeangelt und dann mit einer Machete darauf rumgehauen bis sie aufging. Entweder wurden die Diebe dann unterbrochen oder sie haben tatsächlich eine kleine zusammengerollte Plastiktüte übersehen, in der sich größere Geldscheine befanden. Dadurch fehlten glücklicherweise "nur" ein Drittel des Geldes.
Für die Schüler der 4.-6. Klasse hatte Doña Sandra für heute einen Gast eingeladen: Don Luís Martín Alvarado von D.A.R.E. (D.A.R.E. = Drug Abuse Resistance Education, wörtlich "Drogen Mißbrauch Widerstand Erziehung"). Für mich sah er zunächst aus wie ein Polizist, der heute ausnahmsweise einen Vortrag in der Schule hält. Daher war ich sehr beeindruckt, wie er seine Sprache und Beispiele an das Alter der Kinder anpasste, so daß diese nicht nur genervt von einer weiteren Autoritätsperson sofort die Klappen dicht machten. Ich habe in Europa noch nicht von dieser Organisation gehört, obwohl sie wohl international operieren soll. Ich glaube sie kommt urprünglich aus den U.S.A.
