Week 8 Day 1 - "El Año Viejo"

There is a fiesta en el parque here in Ciudad Quesada tonight with live music and dancing. The most popular song for New Year's Eve is called El Año Viejo = The Old Year. It is a Colombian song originating from the '50s, but it is popular in many countries across Latin America, including Costa Rica. It requires dancing the cumbia... a tough challenge!

You can find it on You Tube

My goal for the day is to learn the lyrics, so I can sing with the crowd:

yo no olvido al año viejo
pk me ha dejado kosas muy buenas
hay yo no olvido al año viejo
pk me ha dejado kosas muy buenas
mira!
me dejo una chiva,
una burra negra,
una llegua blanka,
y una buena suegra
hay me dejo una chivita,
una burra muy negrita,
una llegua muy blankita
y una buena suegra..
hayyy me dejo, me dejo, me dejo
(dimlo dimlo, )

me dejo una chiva,
una burra negra,
una llegua blanka,
y una buena suegra......
hayy no no no
yo no olvido al año viejo que va
yo no olvido al año viejo

Before going to the parque, though, I joined the festivities you see in the pictures. Marie, a volunteer from another organization who lives with a Costa Rican family, invited me to join her families' party. That's how I met Marielos and family. Her energy and family spirit very much reminded me of my sister Anette. There was an armchair outside the porch and people sitting in the front yard. Somebody was grilling meat on a barbecue, and serving it with warm tortilla. The default picture captures the front yard atmosphere. Then there is one of Marielos and her husband and a brocheta. And the girls picture shows Marie (with the glasses), surrounded by Marielos' daughters; the lady laughing in the middle is a neighbor; and to the left, there is Pamela (she's family).
